There are several different types of coconut oil. Due to the versatility of coconut, it comes in many forms and there are many things that are made from it such as oils, milk, soaps, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers and medications. There are seven main types of coconut oil listed below.
Raw or pure coconut oil is made directly from the meat of the coconut. It is also, called unrefined or pure and can be ingested depending on the process. This type is also used to make the coconut milk which has a different way of processing it.
Refined (cold-pressed or expeller-pressed) coconut oil is processed using the meat of the coconut and can be used for cooking and baking.
Virgin coconut oil is made from the fresh meat of the coconut and is used for weight loss, to improve health and medicinal purposes. This type is commonly used.
Organic coconut oil is grown in organic soil. No pesticides or chemicals are used. This oil is used in organic products for ingestion and external use.
Organic virgin coconut oil is from the palm tree grown in organic soil which is rare.
Fractionated coconut oil is good to use for cooking, as a moisturizer in beauty products like lotion, soap or shampoo. Also used as a carrier oil because it is easily absorbed into the skin.
Hydrogenated coconut oil is processed chemically and should be avoided because it is changed during the processing and is not healthy for the body because of the fats changed or transformed.
Of the seven mentioned above there are six that can be used for healthy reasons either internally or externally depending which oil is used and how it is made. The seventh one is mentioned to give knowledge that it exists and if you see it, you will know what it is and try to avoid it. There area a few other types but the ones above are the ones that are commonly known.
Although coconut oil has been around for many years the types that were made by human hand through the use of milling existed far beyond that. The cost of it usually range from affordable to expensive depending on the type, the origin and amount.
